Lemon, Ginger, Mint Kombucha Mocktail

I’m exited to announce my very first UK only giveaway on the blog. I recently teamed up with a great company here in the UK called Love Kombucha to share a recipe using one of their four great kombucha flavours (Original, Blueberry, Ginger and Ginger & Lime) and to give away a bottle of each of these flavours to one lucky winner!

Before I get into the recipe lets talk a bit about kombucha first, maybe you’ve heard of it… maybe you haven’t. Either way this drink is filled with loads of benefits so let’s get to it…

What is kombucha?

Kombucha (kahm-BOOCH-ah) is essentially a sweet tea that is fermented by a SCOBY, or Symbiotic Colony of Bacteria and Yeast. It is thought that kombucha originated in China around 220BC and was also used early on by the Russians. Organic black tea or green tea and sugar, along with the SCOBY are used to brew the Kombucha, this ferments for between 7-14 days, depending on how strong you like your kombucha, you can drink as is or your can go on to add in fresh fruits or spices to change the flavour of your kombucha.

What are the health benefits of kombucha?

Since kombucha is a fermented drink, one of the things it’s great for is creating beneficial gut bacteria, which is especially helpful for those with leaky gut. Some of the other benefits of drinking kombucha include:

  • Detoxifying the liver.
  • Increasing metabolism.
  • Improving digestion.
  • Helping with arthiritis.
  • Boosting energy
  • Relieving headaches and migraines.

Why ‘Love Kombucha’?

As most of you who have been following along with Cinnamon Eats know, before we moved to the UK, my husband and I lived in the States for about 2 years. Back home in Australia I had never heard of kombucha and it wasn’t until I moved to Michigan that I became aware of this amazing and delicious drink! Needless to say I spent a lot of time at Whole Foods getting my kombucha on ;). Anyway once we moved to the UK, it was hard finding it in the town we live in and then via Twitter I ended up connecting with Love Kombucha and that’s how this whole giveaway happened! I’m delighted to say that all four of their kombucha flavours are DELICIOUS and I love how they come packaged (see photo below)!

Since I really enjoyed the taste of the ‘Ginger and Lime’ flavour I wanted to create a recipe using it. I chose the ‘Ginger & Lime’ to create a refreshing drink, granted it’s wet and cold at the moment in the UK and cold in many other places of the world, but even so this drink would be great for after a workout to replenish your body or you can save the recipe to try it when the weather warms up. In any case this kombucha mocktail, as I like to call it, is bursting with flavour!

Lemon Ginger and Mint Kombucha Mocktail

Ingredients:
  • 1/2 cup (125ml) – 1 cup (250ml) ‘Ginger Lime Kombucha’ from Love Kombucha.
  • 1 cup (125ml) – 1.5 cups (375ml) coconut water (I use this one)
  • 2-3 slices of fresh lime or lemon (I had lemon so I used that).
  • 1 tsp freshly grated ginger (tip: store knobs of ginger peeled in the freezer for easier grating).
  • Sprig of fresh mint to garnish (tip: in the warmer months you can chop up some mint leaves and freeze them into ice cubes to add even more freshness and zing to this drink).
Method:

Pour kombucha into a glass and add in the coconut water. Stir to mix.

Add in your grated ginger and stir.

Add in your lime or lemon slices and your sprig of mint. Enjoy!

I’m not sure what happened with your original comment but thanks for sending in another one! I’m a big fan of kombucha and was very happy to find the Love Kombucha brand! Yes kombucha is made with sugar to feed the scoby but most of it is gone by the time the final product is done. I’m not sure if the one you found had added sugar or not. Good luck! 🙂

I posted a comment on this as soon as you posted this but for some reason my comment’s been lost! Anyway, I’ve been dying to try out kombucha for a while now; I have no idea what it tastes like but I know I’m not getting the probiotics I need since I’m not eating yoghurt on the Whole30 and I haven’t got round to making sauerkraut yet (and besides I’m not WILD about sauerkraut). Anyway I’ve tried looking for kombucha in shops and haven’t found it (although I found some in As Nature Intended that had sugar in which I avoided since you can’t have sugar on the Whole30. I know kombucha is made with sugar but I wasn’t sure whether this was added sugar or not!) so I’d be DEAD excited to win some. If it’s all good I will definitely look into making my own as it would be good to have an alternative to water!

I’ve heard of kombucha but never tried it, I wasn’t even aware that you could buy it in the UK and it looks time-consuming to make, so I’d love to see if this is as delicious as it looks! Thanks 🙂
